HH60 Challenge Route

60km Challenge Route (HH60)
The ideal route for anyone new to Sportives or looking for a slightly gentler training run. Don’t under-estimate it though. This is a challenging route in its own right with around 900m of climbing in its 60km.
After leaving Haydon Bridge the route begins gently as it heads for Fourstones. Following the ancient Stanegate Roman Road (National cycle route 72) it first runs along a high ridge with spectacular views before dropping down into the Tyne Valley at Bardon Mill. The route then follows the old road along the valley to the feed station in Haltwhistle.
After a brief rest (or a long one, it’s entirely up to you), you climb high up the south side of the valley, starting with the infamous Bellister Bank and continuing on and up to Plenmeller Common.
This wonderful ‘top of the world’ ridge ride heads east before a dramatic descent down into the Allen Valley at Whitfield.

Here the HH100 riders turn right for the next part of their adventure while you turn left and head for home. You haven’t quite made it yet though. After following the Allen Valley for a couple of miles you climb up the Cupola bends - the pros can do this in 4 minutes but if you beat 10min you should be proud of yourself.

Yes, you do climb all the way up and out of those trees!

You then cruise across the tops to the Carts Bog Inn (stop for some refreshment if you wish) or just turn left for a final scenic ride across quiet country roads and finally back down into Haydon Bridge and a hero’s welcome back at the Start/Finish location.
